May 26, 2015Over the years as a marriage counsellor I have come across a wide range of issues. There is a desire to find solutions jointly. I have seen homes transform themselves from a site of contestation to a sanctuary. Of course in extreme cases where every effort has been expended and no stone left unturned divorce may be the only solution. Today, however, divorces are a common phenomenon.
Yes, what can be done to ensure harmony in our homes?
- Make your spouse your priority.
- Pray, pray, pray.
- Get to know your spouse.
- Do things together.
- Express your love.
- Demonstrate your love.
- Be authentic.
- Do not allow external factors impinging on your relationship.
- Have me time.
- Have realistic expectations.
- Do not sweep issues under the carpet.
- Have a daily routine that solidifies your relationship.
- Be appreciative.
- Be open about money matters.
- Take care of your appearance.
- Have joint goals.
- Have personal goals.
- Have great friends.
- Use purring words and not snarling words.
- Know when to speak and when to be quiet.
- Be passionate and intimate.
- Avoid pettiness.
- Be humorous. Laughter lubricates life.
- Praise in public and chastise in private.
- Even if you disagree, do not become disagreeable.
- Grow together.
- Be forgiving.
- Be supportive of each other.
- Be of service to others.
- Treat each other with respect.
- Do not become obsessed with social -media.
- Read, read and read.
- Do not dwell on the mistakes of the past.
- Get to know your Creator.
- Get to know your Prophet (PBUH).
